Pilates : Keeping children in good posture

“Sit up straight, keep your back straight, stop slouching…” These are phrases often heard by children. The Pilates method pays special attention to the back, particularly that of children. It helps them learn to improve their posture and correct bad habits, starting as early as age 6.

Children first become aware of their posture to develop the right habits for improvement. The exercises are playful and easy to perform. Depending on the child’s age, it is possible to correct poor habits to relieve or even eliminate minor back pain. From age 6, the focus is primarily on postural balance. At this age, children have well-developed large muscles and deep abdominal muscles. Sessions can be practiced with or without the presence of a parent.

Pilates Method for Children

It is worth noting that Pilates is a suitable activity for children, as the exercises are performed gently and allow gradual mobilization of different parts of the body. This contributes to the child’s physical and mental development. Classes are conducted on the floor (Matwork) with or without small equipment, such as balls, resistance bands, or rollers, which are used to make sessions more varied, fun, and engaging.

Fun and easy to perform, Pilates classes promote relaxation for children, enhance muscle tone, and improve coordination and concentration.

In cases of scoliosis in a child, it is preferable to choose individual sessions, which allow for in-depth work on tension points.
